Makena Wanjiru returns to Kenya after years in hiding, carrying the scars of human trafficking and the trauma of her parents’ fiery deaths. A mysterious photograph linking her uncle James to the powerful Governor Mwangi-Kariuki reignites old questions and forces Makena to confront a web of corruption, land grabs, murder, and family betrayal that stretches back fifteen years. Armed with her father’s charred notebook of evidence, the quiet strength of her partner Roy, activist best friend Pendo, journalist Kamau, and unexpected allies from the Davies family, Makena digs into a ruthless network of enforcers (Silas, Benard Odhiambo, and Kito Mbatha). As she pieces together the truth about the arson that killed her parents and the governor’s far-reaching empire, Makena transforms from a traumatized survivor into a determined avenger.
